This kitchen is part of a beautiful, historical, quirky cottage, with a plethora of period features. But being a very small space, our customers decided they needed a modern, more practical kitchen.
When it comes to designing small kitchens, generally speaking, the smaller the room, the more challenging the designers job becomes. However, the key to designing for small spaces is in excellent planning. For this project, the first thing we had to consider was how to maximise the potential of the footprint. We also considered which appliances we needed to find space for, whilst maintaining a logical and easy to use layout.
One of our goals was to maximise the worktop space. The reason for this was not just for practical purposes, but also to give the illusion of a larger space. However, we also needed to accommodate an integrated fridge, dishwasher, double oven and gas hob with an angled extractor above.
Maximising Space
Large drawers were installed as an effective alternative to cabinet doors. Easy to access, these oversized pull-out drawers can be deep and wide for storing pans and big items away from counter surfaces.
As we needed to utilise every inch of wall space available, we used the full height of the room by extending the cabinets right up to the ceiling. Being an old property, our skilled kitchen fitter had to work around uneven walls and sloping ceilings.
The customers decided to go for a classic colour scheme to complement the feel of the property. In contrast, however, they went with a very modern door style. The high-gloss handleless cashmere doors are great for reflecting the light in the room.
The worktop is Montpellier Ceramic by Königstone and is a very hard-wearing and durable solution. A large, undermounted sink helps to make the most of the worktop area which now provides plenty of space for cooking and baking.
