Traditional Shaker Kitchen with Dakota Quartz Worktops

A shaker style kitchen with marbled worktop and backsplash.

A warm and practical family kitchen

This traditional family kitchen combines classic Shaker styling with practical storage, durable materials and carefully considered lighting.

Painted solid-timber doors in a soft Mussel finish create a calm and welcoming feel, while stainless-steel knobs and cup handles add a simple, timeless detail. The neutral cabinetry works particularly well with the natural tones of the tiled floor and wooden dining furniture, helping the room feel relaxed and comfortable rather than overly formal.

A layout designed for everyday life

The kitchen is arranged around the edges of the room, leaving space at its centre for a substantial family dining table. This allows cooking, dining and everyday family life to take place within one sociable space without compromising the amount of storage or preparation area available.

Generous runs of worktop sit on either side of the range cooker and continue around to the sink beneath the window. This provides useful preparation space while keeping the main cooking and washing areas within easy reach of one another.

The large range cooker forms a natural focal point within the room. Framed by painted cabinetry and a full-height quartz splashback, it gives the kitchen a strong traditional character while providing the capacity needed for family cooking and entertaining.

Marbled quartz surfaces

Dakota quartz was chosen for the worktops, bringing subtle movement and texture to the neutral colour scheme. Its softly marbled appearance introduces visual interest without overwhelming the understated Shaker cabinetry.

The same material continues behind the range cooker and along the rear of the sink area. Using a matching quartz splashback and upstand creates a cohesive finish while providing a practical, easy-to-clean surface in the busiest parts of the kitchen.

Two undermounted Villeroy & Boch ceramic sinks sit beneath the window, preserving the clean lines of the worktop. Their traditional appearance complements the painted timber doors, while the position makes good use of the natural light and garden view.

Storage from floor to ceiling

Careful use of full-height cabinetry helps the kitchen provide substantial storage without making the room feel crowded.

A tall cupboard incorporates internal drawers, open shelving and space for smaller appliances. Keeping these items together and behind a single door allows the main work surfaces to remain clearer while ensuring frequently used ingredients and equipment are still easy to reach.

Additional tall cabinets make use of the available ceiling height, while a mixture of cupboards and drawers provides practical storage for cookware, tableware and everyday kitchen essentials.

Tongue-and-groove panels introduce another traditional detail and help give the fitted furniture a crafted, built-in appearance.

Layers of integrated lighting

Several forms of lighting were incorporated into the design, each serving a different purpose.

LED strip lighting beneath the wall cabinets illuminates the main preparation areas, while internal cupboard lighting makes stored items easier to find. Warm plinth lighting runs beneath the base units, creating a softer atmosphere in the evening and adding definition to the cabinetry.

A further line of lighting above the tall cabinets draws attention to the room’s height and provides a subtle finishing detail around the perimeter of the kitchen. Together, these different layers allow the space to remain practical during food preparation while feeling warm and inviting at other times of day.

A timeless kitchen for a busy home

This project demonstrates how traditional kitchen design can be combined with the practical requirements of modern family life.

The painted Shaker doors, ceramic sinks and range cooker give the room a timeless character, while quartz surfaces, integrated storage and carefully planned lighting make it comfortable and straightforward to use every day.
