Bespoke Dressing Room with Mirrored Shaker Doors

Creating practical storage in a windowless room

Although this newly built home offered plenty of space, it did not provide the practical storage its owners needed. We were asked to transform an underused room into a bespoke dressing room, with generous storage for clothing, footwear and accessories.

The long, narrow shape of the room made careful planning especially important. By designing fitted cabinetry along both walls, we were able to make full use of the available space while retaining a comfortable central walkway. The result is an organised and inviting dressing room in which everything can have its place.

Mirrored doors that enhance the space

As the room has no windows, maintaining a light and open feel was an important part of the design. Mirrored panels were incorporated into the wardrobe doors on both sides of the room, helping to reflect the artificial light and create a greater sense of depth.

Rather than using completely mirrored doors, the mirrors were framed within a traditional beaded Shaker design. This gives the cabinetry a more considered, furniture-like appearance while still providing the practical benefits of full-length mirrors throughout the dressing room.

The wardrobes were finished in a soft taupe colour and complemented by chrome knobs, creating a calm and understated scheme that works beautifully with the neutral carpet and surrounding décor.

Storage designed around the owners

A combination of full-height cupboards and integrated drawers provides flexible storage for different types of clothing and personal belongings. Designing the furniture specifically for the room allowed storage to be incorporated from floor to ceiling, avoiding the gaps and unused areas that are left by freestanding wardrobes.

Internal wardrobe lighting also makes it easier to see and organise the contents of the cupboards. This is particularly useful in a dressing room without natural daylight and adds a subtle sense of luxury to the finished space.

A distinctive display area

At the end of the dressing room, open shelving provides a visual break between the two banks of wardrobes. It creates space for displaying favourite accessories, plants and decorative objects while keeping frequently used items within easy reach.

A substantial natural-timber shelf introduces warmth and character to the otherwise neutral design. Its rustic texture contrasts with the refined painted cabinetry and gives the dressing room an individual feature that feels personal to the home.

A made-to-measure dressing room

This project demonstrates how a room does not need to be especially large, or filled with natural light, to become a practical and attractive dressing area. Through considered planning, made-to-measure furniture and the careful use of mirrors and lighting, an overlooked space has become a valuable part of the home.
